We are midway through an extension on our house. In the meantime my studio looks like a behind the scenes shot of a renovation show. Amongst my furniture and props is a mess of paint cans, fly screens, a hot water system, boxes, and ‘stuff’. It’s the last room that will benefit from the extension and I am anticipating the new ceiling, lighting, and walls.

In order to take the images above I picked my way through all of the above to a tiny space in the corner next to the window, big enough for an short wooden bookcase, a black back drop and my tripod. It’s all I need. Light, and what is in the frame.

I’m still taken with the philosophy of memento mori, and the creation of beautiful floral images that feature animals and insects and speak to us of reminders of our life and death. I find the poor pigeon beautiful in it’s textures and tones. The hawk moth is equally striking, given it’s size and the velvety look of it’s body. The flowers are a mixture of homegrown and store brought - from Unveiling Poppy. The vases have been found while op-shopping and on ebay.

(The pigeon was given to me after it flew into a window and died. I found the hawk moth lifeless in my house after coming in on the laundry.)
