‘The Artist with Covid’

Christina Lowry
The Artist with Covid (2022)

“As the Covid 19 pandemic continues to rage with wave after wave, all aspects of life are impacted. In this work Lowry documents her experience as an artist suffering from Covid 19. The wilted flowers (left over from her first solo exhibition) are strewn across the work, tumbling from an overturned vase. Representing herself through the wilted blooms, Lowry also pays homage to those who were not so lucky, with a skull balanced on a pile of unused tissues. Embedded within the image are further Covid tropes. Used tissues, at-home tests and pain killers litter the composition. Discarded tissues replace the draped fabric which traditionally would feature in the Dutch Golden Age style works. Not only does this work reflect the artist’s direct experience with Covid 19, but also the growing weariness experienced by all as the pandemic nears its third year.” Bree Di Mattina
