‘Curio Vanitas’ 2022

Making art allows me to follow my curiosity and examine that which I am drawn to. To experiment and explore symbolism, from Dutch art to skulls, flowers to taxidermy.

The idea for this piece was persistent. I just kept thinking about it. A skull, a floral crown, butterflies, taxidermy birds, and bird skulls. I gathered the items with the intention of making this piece, then shot them in my studio with natural light and a lot of careful arranging.

The skull and some of the birds were borrowed from Qld Museum loans, the taxidermy Gouldian finch I brought from @alexartandtaxidermy, the bird and rat skulls I brought from @ornithological.osteology, while Amy from @unveilingpoppystore made the incredible floral headpiece.
